So today we are going to talk about Elderberry Syrup. I got the inspiration for this post from the folks over at Menchard Farm as they had posted about it. Now I have heard and seen a lot of posts about elderberry syrup so I was curious and looked into it. Well, I decided to give it a try.
What is Elderberry Syrup?
Elderberry syrup comes from the berries of the Sambucus Tree or as some people call it, the European Elderberry. Elderberries have been documented throughout history for their use in medicinal treatments such as the Native Americans utilizing it to treat infections; and the ancient Egyptians using it to treat respiratory issues but it even goes back further than that, all the way back to 400 BC to the time of Hippocrates who called it the “medicine chest“. Still, even today modern medicine is utilizing parts or portions of the elderberry in some medicines like the corticosteroid prednisone Enbrel and Humira.

How to Make Elderberry Syrup Recipe

- 31/2 cups of water
- ⅔ cup dried elderberries
- 2 tbsp of grated ginger
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground cloves
- 1 cup of raw honey
- Combine the water, elderberries, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves in a medium saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, uncover, and reduce heat to simmer for approximately 40 to 45 minutes or until the liquid is reduced by half.
- Remove from the heat and let it cool.
- Once it is lukewarm, mash the berries with a spoon or whatever works best for you.
- Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth into a bowl or jar.
- Allow to cool completely.
- Add the honey and mix well.
- Once everything is mixed up, pour it into your favorite mason jar or bottle.
- Keep stored in the refrigerator.
